Latest Updates on Australian Visa Policies: Stability for Primary and Secondary Education

Release Time:2024-03-28 Browse:4
Effective March 23, 2024, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has implemented several key policy adjustments to enhance the integrity of the visa system. These changes primarily target the Student Visa (Subclass 500) and Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485).
Importantly, these updates do not affect primary and secondary school applicants. English proficiency requirements remain unchanged for those enrolling in Australian schools.
Key Policy Adjustments:
1. Higher English Language Proficiency Requirements
  • Direct Entry: Minimum score increased from 5.5 to 6.0.
  • ELICOS Packages: Minimum score increased from 4.5 to 5.0.
  • Foundation/Pathway Programs: Minimum score is now 5.5.
  • Graduate Work Visa (Subclass 485): Requirements increased from 6.0 to 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component). The test validity is now one year.
2. Updates to Graduate Work Visa (Subclass 485) Duration
The previously announced extensions for specific degrees have been revoked. The new durations are:
  • Bachelor’s Degree: 2 years
  • Masters (Coursework): 2 years
  • Masters (Research): 3 years
  • PhD: 3 years
  • Note: Graduates in regional areas remain eligible for an additional year.
3. Strategic Student Visa Processing
Visa processing is now prioritized based on the risk level of education providers:
  • Low-risk providers: Benefit from simplified and expedited processing.
  • High-risk providers (primarily VET institutions): Subject to more rigorous scrutiny and longer processing times.
4. Restrictions on Transitioning from Subclass 485 to Student Visas
New measures restrict holders of Temporary Graduate visas from applying for a new Student visa while onshore, aiming to ensure students return home or transition to permanent work.
5. Introduction of the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement has officially replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test. The assessment focuses on:
  • The applicant’s ties to their home country.
  • Academic and professional background.
  • How the chosen course in Australia will tangibly benefit their future career.
