Canada has recently introduced updates to its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) policy, bringing important changes for international students planning to study and work in Canada.
Under the transitional policy, international students who apply for a PGWP before November 1, 2024, may still be eligible under the current regulations, provided that their study program meets the basic PGWP requirements and they maintain valid legal status throughout their studies.
However, for students submitting a study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, additional eligibility criteria will apply when applying for a PGWP. In addition to meeting language proficiency requirements, students must ensure that their chosen field of study aligns with Canada’s updated labor market priorities.
According to the new regulations, non-degree program graduates must complete studies in areas linked to occupations facing long-term labor shortages in Canada. These eligible fields are categorized into five major sectors:
As of October 17, 2024, the following programs offered by Seneca College meet the eligibility requirements outlined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and qualify for PGWP consideration under the updated policy.
This policy adjustment reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain international talent in industries experiencing significant workforce demand, while also creating clearer pathways for international students to transition from education to employment in Canada.
